- You have more freedom than you’re using.
You have more freedom than you’re using.
Read time: 3 min.
It's Saturday.
The newsletter is due today. I sit down at my laptop, open a blank page, and wait for the words to come.
They don't.
No inspiration. No clear angle. Just a cursor blinking back at me.
I could force it. Push through. Type something because "it has to get done." That would be the logical move, right?
But I don't.
So I built a desk
Instead, I get up and start assembling my new electric desk. One thing leads to another, and before I know it, I'm completely rebuilding my entire home office. Moving furniture. Rerouting cables. Creating space.
And somewhere between tightening screws and shifting chairs, something shifts in my head too.
The pressure drops. My mind clears.
And that's when the idea for this newsletter just... appears.
Here's the thing:
I could have stayed at that laptop all morning. Forced myself to produce something. Met my deadline. Checked the box.
And honestly? I probably would have written something decent. Maybe even good.
But it wouldn't have felt like this.
This ease. This clarity. This sense of "oh right, this is why I started my business in the first place."
Not to become my own strictest boss.
But to actually have the choice to do something different.
The freedom you're not using
Most entrepreneurs have this option. They just don't take it.
They have the freedom on paper. No manager looking over their shoulder, no punch clock, no mandatory meetings.
But they still operate like they need permission to step away.
The ability to say on a Tuesday morning: "I don't have it today" — and then actually do something else.
And to trust that it will work out.
Because it always does.
Learning to use it
Freedom isn't the absence of structure. It's not chaos or randomness or "doing whatever you feel like."
It's the ability to choose differently when the moment calls for it.
And you only get good at it by practicing.
The newsletter you're reading right now?
It got written.
Just not the way I planned.
There's probably something in your life right now that would work the same way.
If you'd just stop forcing it.
Much love,
— Martijn
