Why even build a coaching business?
Read time: 2.5 min.
The universe doesn't give a damn about you.
I know that sounds harsh, but hear me out.
Most people find this depressing.
But I think it's the most liberating truth you'll ever hear.
Because if the universe doesn't care, that means you're not stuck to some predetermined path. You're not bound by cosmic expectations or universal rules about what your life "should" look like.
You get to create your own meaning.
And what's a better way to create meaning than building a coaching business around something you actually care about?
Think about the alternative.
Right now, millions of people are sitting in office cubicles, making decent money, checking off their daily tasks... and feeling completely empty inside.
They're successful on paper. Good salary. Nice benefits. Job security.
But there's this nagging feeling:
"Is this it? Is this what I worked so hard for?"
Because something crucial is missing: meaning.
They're solving problems they don't care about, for companies that would replace them tomorrow, building someone else's dream while their own potential sits on the shelf collecting dust.
A coaching business is different
When you help someone finally stop people-pleasing, teach a manager how to motivate their team, or show creatives how to build consistent income — you're not just making money.
You’re doing something bigger:
Solving problems you actually care about.
Working with people you genuinely want to help.
Building something nobody can take away from you.
Every client conversation, every breakthrough moment, every "aha!" you facilitate?
That's you actively creating significance in a universe that provides none.
But what if you're not ready?
Look, I get why starting feels scary.
Who am I to think I can help people?
What if nobody needs what I have to offer?
But here's the thing: while you're questioning yourself, there are people right now who desperately need exactly what you've learned.
People stuck in careers that drain their soul.
High achievers hitting walls they can't break through.
Parents overwhelmed trying to balance it all.
They don't need a perfect mentor.
They need a fellow traveler who's a few steps ahead.
Here's what happens when you start
When you start your coaching business:
You quit solving problems you don't care about.
You stop dreading Mondays and start looking forward to them.
You finally get to use your brain for something that matters to you.
Instead of wondering "is this it?" — you know this is it.
And even in a cold, uncaring cosmos, you cared anyway.
You chose to help. You changed lives. You gave it your all.
If that's not meaningful, I don't know what is.
Much love,
— Martijn
P.S. I'm opening up discovery calls with people who are done accepting meaningless work and ready to build a profitable coaching business around what they actually care about. If you want one, reply to this email.
