The Lesson No Course Can Teach You.

Read time: 3 min.

3 weeks ago, my girlfriend broke.

Not her body. Her brain.

She had a brutal exam week coming — three finals in a row.

If she crushed them, she could finally relax for the summer.

So she built a military-grade schedule.

Study. Train. Sleep. Repeat. For 10 days.

And it worked — until one night, she couldn’t sleep.

Too alert. Too much pressure. Too many tabs open in her brain.

The next night? Same story.

She was afraid of another sleepless night.

And that fear kept her even more awake.

Every night became a vicious cycle:

No sleep → no focus → no learning → panic.

And the harder she tries to control her sleep, the more it eludes her.

Now, her exams are finished.

But somehow, the anxiety attacks aren’t.

They ambush her right before bed every night.

But there’s also a positive side to this sad story.

The Unteachable Lesson

Through this painful experience, she finally grasped something:

The vital importance of letting go.

She could quote mindfulness experts. She'd advised friends about burnout.

Yet only now does she truly understand this principle in her bones.

Some lessons can only be learned through experience.

We've all heard these a thousand times:

  • "Done is better than perfect."

  • "Worrying won’t fix anything."

  • "Clarity comes through action, not thinking."

They sound like clichés because they are.

But clichés become clichés because they're universally true.

Most of us still believe we're the exception.

My girlfriend can't think her way out of anxiety.

You can't think your way to a successful personal brand.

Both demand surrender. Both require embracing uncertainty. Both mean taking imperfect action while your stomach churns with doubt.

The Doers vs. The Thinkers

The coaches who transform their expertise into thriving personal brands aren't necessarily the most knowledgeable.

They're the ones who:

  • Launch before feeling ready

  • Publish despite their inner critic

  • Make mistakes faster than everyone else

Their stumbles teach them what no course ever can.

The Hard Truth

What you're trying to control is actually controlling you.

The move you're avoiding by consuming just one more course is precisely the move that would create momentum.

The thing holding you back is your unwillingness to be held back — to fail, learn, and evolve through direct experience rather than theoretical knowledge.

What This Means For You

Ask yourself:

  1. What action am I replacing with more research?

  2. What "failure" am I avoiding that would actually teach me what I need?

The path to your profitable personal brand isn't lined with perfect knowledge.

It's paved with imperfect action.

Much love,

— Martijn
