This Movie Taught a Valuable Life-Lesson

Read time: 2.5 min.
I finally watched the movie Gladiator yesterday.
Yes, I know I’m late.
But better late than never, right?
If you don’t know, Gladiator is considered one of the best movies ever made.
And let me tell you, it delivered.
The opening scene hit me like a ton of bricks.
Imagine this:
The main character, Maximus, walks in a breathtaking wheat field.
He slowly runs his fingers through the wheat.
There’s a gentle breeze.
He spots a bird chilling on a branch.
It brings a soft smile to his face.
The scene is stunning.
Until it zooms out.
In a split second, everything changes.
The Plot Twist
The peaceful scene morphs into this intense battlefield.
Maximus is not just taking a walk.
He’s about to fight in a brutal war.
Talk about a reality check.
But here’s the thing that hit me hard:
Maximus doesn’t let the chaos consume him.
Instead, he takes a moment to appreciate life’s beauty.
It’s like he’s saying, ’’Yeah this situation sucks, but I’m not letting it influence me.’’
Seeing Life Through a Different Lens
The ability to switch perspectives on command is a superpower.
That’s why I started this thing called the Perspective Pause.
It’s a mental model I use every day.
Let’s zoom in on it.
The Perspective Pause
Every night before sleeping, I take 2 minutes to zoom in.
I grab a post-it note out of my nightstand.
Write down one thing I’m grateful for that day.
Fold it into a tiny square.
Toss it in a big ol’ jar by my bed.
At the end of the year, I open the jar, zoom back out, and reflect on a year filled with beautiful moments.
And once a week, usually on Sundays, I take 15 minutes to zoom out.
I put the bigger picture into perspective:
’’Are my goals aligned with my values?’’
’’What am I trying to achieve here?’’
’’Am I too fixated on the results?’’
It’s like hitting pause to make sure I’m heading in the right direction.
Honestly, it’s been a game-changer for me. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and lose sight of the bigger picture.
Anyway, I’m rambling now, but I just wanted to share this little wisdom nugget with you.
I hope it resonates with you as much as it did with me.
Have a wonderful day.
Your friend,
Martijn
