  • I’m in a culture shock.

I’m in a culture shock.

Read time: 2.5 min.

I’m from the Netherlands and have never gone outside of Europe.

But since last week, that has changed.

I packed to go on a 3-week backpacking trip in Thailand with my girlfriend.

Welcome to Thailand!

17 wakeful hours later, we finally touched down in the city of Bangkok.

We slug out the plane, exchange the Euro (€) for Thai Bath (฿), and take a taxi to the hotel.

Then we went to explore the city.

It’s pure and utter chaos.

Bikes, cars, and tuk-tuks are flying by from left and right.

But the people are kind, caring, and very respectful.

This was much different during the flight stopover in Guangzhou, China.

The people at the airport were cold, distant, and unfriendly.

It was quite a shock.

A pleasant surprise

Exploring further, we come across a Thai massage tent.

A 60-minute massage for around 10 euros.

That’s no money!

Let's take the opportunity.

The little lady asked us to follow her.

She led us through a narrow, dark, sketchy corridor.

Okay, this was not what we expected…

After passing through a vague room, and climbing up some stairs, we made it to a beautiful space with luxurious massage beds and air conditioning.

The massage was divine—the best I’ve ever had.

And all that for as little as 10 euros.

Nightlife in Bangkok

The nightlife on the streets of Bangkok is even more vibrant than during the day.

Within 10 seconds:

  • A salesperson pinches my bicep.

  • A dead scorpion on a stick is shoved in my face.

  • A ladybody starts stripping on a chair in the middle of the street.

Then a warm rain shower falls.

Dozens of little tents fly out of the pockets of the street food stall owners.

The wet, black floor tiles reflect the colorful light from the glowing neon signs.

This is the image of Bangkok that I had in mind.

The impressions of this city are overwhelming, but that’s also what makes it so much fun.

Around every corner, a new adventure awaits.

I’m looking forward to explore the even wilder parts—like jungles and islands— of Thailand in the upcoming days.

But now, it’s time to hit the bed and catch up on my lost sleep.

Good night friends.

Speak soon,

— Martijn
