How to Win While Others Burn Out
Read time: 3 min.
You probably started your business for freedom.
The freedom to set your own hours.
Take vacations whenever you want.
Leave the stress of a boss behind.
But here’s the ironic truth:
Most entrepreneurs become the toughest boss they’ve ever had.
I know because I did too.
Just one more task..
Last week, I got a headache while working.
Normally, I’d push through:
“Just finish this task, then I’ll rest.”
But that day, I stopped and asked myself:
“What would I do if I worked for someone else?”
I’d stand up, take a walk, make a cup of tea, or simply take a break.
And that’s when it hit me:
I’d built a business to escape a bad boss—only to become one myself.
Maybe you’ve done the same:
Ignoring signs of burnout, thinking, “Just one more hour.”
Sacrificing rest, hoping it’ll get you ahead faster.
Believing freedom is something you’ll earn later.
But where does that lead?
Burnout. Frustration. And ultimately, giving up.
You can hustle your way to the top—but it won’t be a journey you enjoy.
Here’s the better alternative:
The Game of Consistency
If you’re an entrepreneur, you know this isn’t a sprint—it’s a marathon.
Entrepreneurship is a game of decades.
And in games like these, there’s one golden rule:
Consistency beats intensity.
Every. Single. Time.
So stop chasing the highs of intensity:
Pulling sleepless nights to “stay ahead of the competition.”
Filling every minute of the day with “productivity.”
Pushing past your limits because “this is what it takes to succeed.”
Instead, go all-in on the game of consistency.
Here’s how:
1. Plan Your Day Around Energy
You’re not a robot, so stop working like one.
Instead of fighting your energy, listen to it.
Use your peak hours for creative work.
Schedule easy tasks when your energy dips.
Take breaks to make the most of your energy reserves.
When you let your energy—not the clock—decide, you’ll get more done with less effort.
2. Freedom Starts Now
Most entrepreneurs act like freedom is something they’ll unlock after the grind.
But freedom isn’t a destination. It’s a choice you make every day.
Want to take a walk? Take it.
Craving lunch at your favorite spot? Go.
Feel like watching a quick episode of your favorite series? Do it guilt-free.
Small freedoms today fuel the consistency you need tomorrow.
3. Time Limits = Clarity + Results
Here’s the truth about work: it’ll take as much time as you give it.
Give yourself all day for one task, and you’ll:
Overthink.
Over-perfect.
Waste energy on details that don’t matter.
Instead, set a timer:
“I’ll finish this draft in 90 minutes.”
It forces you to prioritize, focus, and actually finish.
And when the timer’s up—stop.
You’ll be shocked how much you can achieve with focus and a hard stop.
Why We’ll Win
We persevere while others burn out.
Because we understand the game is long.
We work smarter, respect our energy, and play to win the long term.
And the best part? Our journey isn’t a struggle.
We enjoy it. We have fun. We work from a place of freedom.
While others are stuck in a rat race, we’re truly living.
A Simple Challenge for You
This week, pick one way to prioritize consistency:
Take a real break when your body asks for it.
Set a time limit for one task and stick to it.
Or ask yourself: “Am I being the boss I’d want to work for?”
Start small. Start today.
The game is long, but you’re in it to win it.
So respect your energy. Work smart. And most of all: enjoy yourself.
Much love,
Martijn
