How to Be Original as A Creator

Read time: 3 min.

Most people kill their personal brand before it even takes its first breath.

They think they need to ‘be original’ right out of the gate.

So they stare at the screen, trying to pull genius out of thin air.

They overthink. They hesitate. They second-guess themselves into oblivion.

I know this because I used to be this person.

I remember sitting at my desk, fine-tuning a single tweet for an hour, only to hit publish and see it flop.

But I refused to study other creators because then I wasn’t being ‘authentic’.

Big mistake.

It cost me months of trial and error, and I don’t want the same for you.

The Imitation Game

See, I had this belief that I couldn’t imitate other creators.

But imagine if you want to learn how to cook.

Nobody becomes a master chef by throwing random ingredients into a pan and hoping for magic.

First, you follow recipes.

Then, you learn techniques.

Then, after enough practice, you start experimenting and making dishes your own way.

Writing online is the same.

The best creators don’t start by reinventing the wheel.

They recognize the patterns, repeat them until they become second nature, then create something original.

Here’s how you can do that (without wasting months like I did).

Step 1: Recognize the Patterns

When you’re starting out, everything feels overwhelming.

  • What should I post?

  • What kind of content works?

  • Why do some posts take off while others flop?

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to guess.

The answers are already out there.

Look at the people who have the audience you want.

Study what they’re doing.

  • What kind of posts get the most engagement?

  • How do they structure their writing?

  • What angles do they use?

Your job isn’t to copy them.

Your job is to recognize what’s working.

Action step: Scroll through successful accounts. Find a post with high engagement. Study the idea, tone, and format. These are your first clues.

Step 2: Use the Patterns

Now that you’ve identified a winning structure, it’s time to apply it.

  1. Take the high-performing tweet from step 1.

  2. Swap the core idea for your own.

  3. Rewrite it in your voice.

This helps you internalize what works while making the tweet your own.

At this stage, you’re not trying to be completely original.

Your job is to master the patterns before innovating.

Step 3: Create Your Own Patterns

This is where the magic happens.

After enough reps, your style starts to emerge.

Your voice becomes unmistakable.

You shift from following patterns to setting them.

Just like a chef who’s trained for months…

You are now creating your own recipes.

And here’s the best part:

Beginners will start copying you.

Action step: Look at your most popular posts from the last month. Take note of the common topics, structure, and tone among them.

Final Words

Building a personal brand isn’t an easy task.

But you can make it much easier if you put aside your ego and learn from people who are a few steps ahead of you.

It’s a process. It takes time. But if you stick with it, soon you’ll be the one others are imitating.

With that, I want to you leave you with this quote:

“True wisdom is acquired by the person who sees patterns and comes to understand those patterns in their connection to other patterns — and from these interconnected patterns, learns the code of life.”

— Hendrith Vanlon Smith Jr.

See you next week.

Much love,

— Martijn
