4 life-changing lessons from 3 weeks of travel.

Read time: 3.5 min.

I went to Thailand for a 3-week backpacking trip.

I crossed lush jungles, hopped across paradise-like islands, and tasted the most delicious food.

But once I got home, it wasn’t these memories that stood out. It was the valuable lessons I'd unconsciously picked up along the way.

Here are the 5 most enlightening lessons from the trip:

1. Function above perfection

Our first stop was Bangkok.

The streets are busy, with junk piled up or ‘stored’ away in every corner.

But it’s clear that the things that truly matter are well-maintained.

The supermarkets have air-conditioning, the restrooms are clean, and when the first raindrops hit, dozens of pop-up tents quickly fly out of the pockets of the stallholders.

Somehow, everything fits together and works just right.

And I find that to be a refreshing mindset.

It’s liberating not to constantly worry about small imperfections.

It’s okay to set the bar a bit lower because ’good enough’ is often better than the endless chase for perfection.

When something is functional and effective, perfection becomes an unnecessary luxury.

2. Money happiness

One evening, during a walk along the beach, I saw a young man performing a fire show.

He danced with blazing torches, his movements smooth and precise, and a joyful smile brightening his face.

Completely lost in his art, he captivated the entire crowd with his presence.

After the show, he went around with a tip box.

”Could that be his only source of income for the day?” I thought.

What struck me was how money seemed almost irrelevant to him.

In that fleeting moment, his entire focus was on sharing his art.

This young man wasn’t wealthy in material terms.

But he had found something much more valuable:

His passion.

The fire show wasn’t just an act; it was his soul on display.

The next day, I ventured into the jungle to visit an Elephant Sanctuary.

As I drove through the indigenous villages, I saw homes that most people would label as ‘poor’.

I couldn’t help but wonder how they could be happy in such conditions.

But they were, without a doubt.

The villagers were full of laughter, radiated youthful energy, and carried a deep-rooted contentment that's rarely seen in the West.

These experiences taught me that true happiness has little to do with material wealth and everything to do with passion, gratitude, and being part of a tight-knit community.

Now you might wonder:

”Aren’t they afraid of catching a strange disease or being eaten by a tiger?”

No, these people lived in the moment and knew no fear.

This brings me to the next lesson—letting go of control.

3. Letting go of control

One of the most memorable moments of my trip was when I went scuba diving.

I jumped off the boat into the underwater world, surrounded by curious fish, vibrant corals, and even a few small sharks.

But I soon realized how little control I had. The strong current carried me wherever it wanted.

Breathing underwater felt unnatural, and my body instinctively resisted, especially with the fear of swallowing a mouthful of salty seawater. On top of that, I was chained to weights around my waist to make me sink—not to mention the heavy oxygen tank strapped to my back.

Instead of fighting it, I chose to surrender.

This moment of letting go, of fully accepting my lack of control, was a revelation. It felt as if a wave of peace washed over me.

Since then, I’ve been trying to let go more in my daily life and simply go with the flow.

4. The Future of My Brand

This journey has really helped me clarify my future plans.

I’ve fallen in love with storytelling and now understand how crucial personal stories are in shaping a powerful personal brand.

When I started, my goal was to share my healing journey from a leaky gut and offer support to those facing similar stress-related challenges. That mission remains close to my heart.

But now, I see an even bigger picture.

Moving forward, I’m excited to evolve my brand into a story-driven platform where personal experiences form the foundation.

I want to help both individuals and businesses clarify and share their own stories. I know it’s not just about choosing the right words; the real challenge lies in creating a genuine connection with your audience—being authentic, relatable, and avoiding the trap of sounding like just another guru.

Many creators face this struggle, especially in the beginning. From my experience, I’ve seen how a well-told, sincere story can make a significant impact. It’s one of the most powerful ways to build trust, connect, and educate.

I hope these stories will enlighten you, just as they have for me.

Closing Words

During my journey, I wrote all my notes in Dutch, my native language. I used to write everything in English, but switching to Dutch brought back the joy of writing.

The words flowed more easily, my vocabulary grew, and my creativity was revived. It felt as if I’d rediscovered the magic of language.

If you struggle to enjoy writing, give this a try.

Much love and until next week,

— Martijn
